The relative mRNA expression levels of (A) IL-1β and (B) TNFα in the right spinal cord segment L4/L5 were measured at days four and 21 after CCI surgery in three groups of rats receiving either daily dexamethasone (DEX), RU-486 (RU), or vehicle (CON) injections. Early after injury activation or inhibition of GR did not alter the relative expression levels of both cytokines. In the later phase, the mRNA of IL-1β was downregulated by dexamethasone and RU-486 treatment, whereas TNFα mRNA levels were reduced only by GR activation. Data are expressed as mean ± s.e.m. *p<0.05, **p<0.01, ***p<0.001.
