Proposed model of MYB44 function in stressed plants. Upon stress perception, a mitogen-activated protein kinase cascade is activated. MAPKK4 phosphorylates and thereby activates MPK3. MPK3 phosphorylates MYB44, thereby stimulating MYB44 function as transcriptional inducer [40]. Right: MYB44-induced target genes, directly or indirectly, enhance the antioxidant capacity, e.g., through activating reactive oxygen species (ROS)-scavenging enzymes. This ultimately leads to a balanced redox state and prevention of cell death; and Left: in contrast, dominant repression of MYB44 target genes adversely affects redox-balancing, leading to massive accumulation of destructive ROS.
