The rat in the left part of the cage is stimulated using a skull-fixed cochlear-implant (CI) connector. The implanted device was connected to the external stimulator ‘CI in a box’ by way of a swivel. The input for the CI delivers the speech processor. During chronic stimulation, a companion rat resided in the right part of the cage to avoid detrimental effects of social deprivation.
