Estrone decreases β-amyloid levels in the cortex after TBI. The levels of β-amyloid (a neural marker of injury) were greatly increased in the cerebral cortex in the placebo group. This increase was not observed on the contralateral side of the cerebral cortex (A). Estrone treatment significantly (p<0.01) reduced β-amyloid levels in the cortex (B). One-way analysis of variance with Tukey's post-hoc test was used to determine if the observations were significantly different (n=6 for on-injured controls, 8 for shams, 12 for placebo, and 11 for estrone; DAPI, 4,6-diamino-2-phenylindole; TBI, traumatic brain injury).
