Macrophage and endothelial cell immunostaining of representative ligated left carotid arteries. Immunohistochemical staining of the ligated left carotid lesions showed substantial macrophages infiltrating the neointima (two-headed arrows) and peri-adventitia (arrows). Immunofluorescence carotid staining of the outlined region demonstrated more intense RGD-HFn-Cy5.5 signal (red), colocalizing with neointimal macrophages (green; arrowheads), as compared to HFn-Cy5.5 (see text for quantitative colocalization analysis). Immunohistochemical carotid staining also showed positive endothelial cell staining along the luminal border, but few endothelial cells in the neointima and adventitia.
