Mitochondrial and metabolic control of HSC quiescence. While glycolytic metabolism is crucial for maintenance of HSCs in quiescence, functional mitochondria are also necessary. LKB1 and AMPK can be activated upon low energy conditions to regulate mitochondrial function and biogenesis, partially through the inhibition of anabolic processes mediated by mTORC1.
