Experimental design and the anatomy of VOT region. a, Experiment 1 contains five different conditions: single numeral, single letter, scrambled numeral, scrambled letter, and foreign numeral, all of which are morphologically similar. Subjects were instructed to respond with a keypad button press whether they could read (button 1) or not read the symbols (button 2). Experiment 2 contains three different conditions: numerals, number words, and non-number words that sound phonetically similar (e.g., “7,” “seven,” “heaven”). Subjects were instructed to read aloud each stimulus.
