Expression of NKCC1 transcripts in the DLPFC of patients with schizophrenia and nonpsychiatric controls. The expression of NKCC1b (1–27 (Δ21)) (*) and 1–2a (**) mRNA was significantly decreased in the DLPFC of patients with schizophrenia (NKCC1b: N = 48; 1–2a: N = 45) compared with controls (NKCC1b: N = 47; 1–2a: N = 44) (b,e). Expression of NKCC1a (1–27), 1–27 (21a), and 1–4a transcripts was not different in the DLPFC of patients with schizophrenia (NKCC1a: N = 45; 1–27: N = 44; 1–4a: N = 45) compared with controls (NKCC1a: N = 48; 1–27: N = 47; 1–4a: N = 48) (a,c,d).
