Effect of hydration strength of precipitating salt on protein release. Chitosan particles containing 100μg FITC-BSA were prepared using Hofmeister series salts: Na2SO4, (NH4)2SO4, MgSO4, Na3C6H5O7, or Na3PO4, and released in PBS. Samples were collected at each time point and protein release was quantified by measuring florescence using a spectrofluorometer. Each data point represents the mean of 4 independent samples. Protein release by NH4SO4 particles was significantly lower than other precipitant salt groups at all time points (P ≤ 0.05). Protein release by Na2SO4 particles was significantly lower than other precipitant salt groups for incubation times greater than 48 hours (P ≤ 0.05).
