Recommendations for physical activity promotion among Somali men

Organizational level
  • Assure a “critical mass” of Somali participants to avoid sociolinguistic isolation and embarrassment.

  • Foster acceptance of non-standard exercise clothing.

  • Facilitate opportunities for a broad “menu” of individual aerobic exercises, strength training, and team-based activities.

  • Assign exercise guides (coaches) for exercise opportunities.

  • Develop a “buddy system” for accountability and socialization.

  • Avoid structured group exercise classes.

  • Incorporate walking groups into programs, particularly with elders.

  • Explore low-cost options for exercise.

  • Facilitate transportation (e.g., community-based car pooling) for elders.

  • Maintain rigorous indoor physical activity options, particularly in the winter.

Community level
  • Draw on existing channels of community advocacy within the Somali community to lead and facilitate “word of mouth” action.

  • In spite of obstacles, promote physical activity as an opportunity to embrace and integrate with the broader, non-Somali communities.

  • Maintain an atmosphere of complete intolerance for harassment of and false assumptions about a group of Somali men.
