Three and 12 months old UCP2-/- and WT C57BL/6 mice were treated with cerulein as indicated (n = 6–8 per time point, strain and age group). Pancreatic sections of the mice were stained with H&E and scored as described in the “Materials and methods” section. The total histological score shown in (A) represents the sum of the scores for edema (B), potentially reversible cell damage (C), cell death (D) and infiltration with immune cells (E), each of which scored on a scale from 0–3. Data are shown as mean ± SEM. *P<0.05 (WT versus corresponding UCP2-/- mice).
