Model picture of the self-organizing actin network within lamellipodia. ATP-hydrolysis acts as a timer mechanism resulting in distinguishable zones dominated by different actin accessory proteins. Branching and hence nucleation of new filaments is driven by Arp2/3 at the front while in the middle zone debranching and depolymerization dominate.
