VEGF drives EMT of epicardial cells. Epicardial cells were marked with a replication-incompetent LacZ virus and cultured with growth factors. A: Blue cells that moved into the myocardium and subepicardial space were scored as mesenchymal (Mes). Blue cells that remained on the epicardial surface were scored as epithelial (Epi). B: The ratio of mesenchymal to epicardial cells is shown on the Y-axis of the graph. Culturing Stage-26 hearts in the presence of VEGF, TGFβ1, and VEGF + TGFβ1, significantly increased the M/E ratio as compared to the untreated control (P < 0.05).
