Toxic noniron MPs induce the small-colony variant (SCV) phenotype. WT and ΔhrtB strains were streaked onto TSA plates adjacent to the characterized SCV controls, the ΔhemA and ΔmenB mutants. These plates were either left untreated or impregnated with 5 μM MP. Images were taken after 20 h of growth. The induction of the SCV phenotype is indicative of respiration deficiency.
