Experimental procedure for one trial. (A) Distractor phase. A novel object was presented without a label (e.g., ‘‘Look at this!”). (B) Learning phase. Four novel objects were presented and given a label (e.g., ‘‘Look at this blicket!”) on an equal spacing or expanding learning schedule. (C) Test phase. Four objects were presented and the child was asked to identify the target (e.g., ‘‘Can you hand me the blicket?”). For children in the immediate condition, testing occurred immediately after the learning phase. For children in the delayed testing condition, testing occurred the next day.
