BAX is activated by BH3 proteins and inhibited by BCL proteins. (b) The balance between BH3 and BCL protein concentrations determines the activity of BAX. The mathematical model suggests that the BAX response exhibits bistability. In the model, the switch from living to dying is one-way. (Online version in colour.)
