The oxygenator (also known as the membrane lung) is divided into a blood compartment and a gas compartment by a semipermeable membrane. The pump propels venous blood into the oxygenator and gas exchange occurs across the membrane as the blood interacts with fresh gas. After oxygenation and carbon dioxide removal, the arterialized blood is returned to the patient through an artery. A blender allows for adjustment of the fraction of delivered oxygen (FDO2).
