Sphingolipid pathway and subcellular localization of sphingolipid enzymes. The biosynthesis of sphingolipids begins in the endoplasmatic reticulum (ER)–Golgi network. Vesicular transport distributes sphingolipids to different compartments such as plasma membrane, and lysosome.
