NIRS probes were positioned on the heads of newborns so as to cover two regions of interest (ROIs) on each brain hemisphere. The inferior ROIs correspond roughly to temporal lobe and perisylvian areas, whereas the superior ROIs correspond to frontoparietal areas. Because the NIRS probes have a fixed size, the variability in head size and shape of newborns prevents precise scalp/brain mappings.
