Expression of PexRD2 Promotes in Planta Growth and Sporulation of P. infestans.

(A) Transient expression of GFPPexRD2 in one half of a N. benthamiana leaf by agroinfiltration, followed by inoculation with P. infestans 88069 zoospores, enhances the growth of the pathogen, compared with expression of GFP in the second half. Image taken at 5 d after zoospore inoculation.

(B) Lesion area achieved at 5 d after zoospore inoculation following infection of GFP- or GFPPexRD2-expressing leaf tissue with P. infestans 88069. Results are the mean ± se of infections from two independent experiments using at least eight leaves each. The asterisk indicates a value significantly different from the GFP control (P < 0.001) as determined by t test.

(C) Percentage of total inoculation sites showing necrosis and/or sporulation for the same infections.
