Treatment Dose Regimen Possible Side Effects

Exclude other underlying causes:
 Bacterial overgrowth
 Drug-related (acarbose, metformin, lactose intolerance)
 Osmotic (resolves with fasting)
 Secretory (consider neuroendocrine tumors)

Metronodiazole 250 mg, TID, ≥ 3 wk Fungal overgrowth

Clonidine 0.1 mg, BID or TID Orthostatic hypotension

Loperamide 2 mg, QID Toxic megacolon

Cholestyramine 4 g, 1 to 6 times daily

Octreotide 50 μg, TID Aggravated nutrient malabsorption
