Figure 5.
Simulated pulse-echo beams for the control and refracted cases are compared by examining slices through the location of maximum pressure in the azimuth direction. In the case of unsteered beams (A), there is net no steering error, although the refracted beam decreases at its peak by 1.45 dB and increases in −6 dB area by 21%. For transmit and receive beams steered to (16°, 0°) (B), there is a net steering error of 1.2°, a decrease in the pressure field maximum of 1.98 dB and an increase in −6 dB area of 24.55%. For transmit and receive beams steered to (32°, 32°) (C), there is a net steering error of 3.6° in each direction, a decrease in the pressure field maximum of 3.53 dB, and in increase in the −6 dB area of the beam of 48.70%.
