FIG. 2

(a) The lipid areal density has a clear transition from a liquid disordered (Ld) to a liquid-ordered (Lo) state around temperature T = 315 K, and to a gel phase at lower T . (b) The tail orientational order parameter 〈S〉 shows an increase in orientation of lipids along the axis perpendicular to the membrane in the Lo phase. (c) The rotationally invariant order parameter 〈Q6〉 shows an increase in hexatic ordering of the head beads entering the Lo phase.
