Residual word distances for individual genomes in free-living (n = 376) and human-pathogen (n = 421) microbes were divided into class levels based on the number of times words were repeated within a genome, from 2 to 30,000. A group mean of the word distance at each repeat level was calculated and plotted above as FREE vs. PATH for the native genome data set (a) and the randomized genome data set (b).
