Canonical correlation analyses reveal DOM optical properties most strongly related to (a) colour (a₄₄₀), (b) the bioavailable fraction of DOC (%BDOC) and (c) carbon use efficiency (CUE). Canonical loadings (correlations between the one canonical variate of our analysis and the respective variables) indicate the strength and direction of the relationship between the respective constraint and individual optical measures (see Methods).
