d

Includes those whose mothers were cohabiting with the biological father at birth;

e

Includes those whose mother was cohabiting with a new partner at birth; Model controls for the following characteristics of the young adults’ mothers, measured in 1979 or 1980: race (non-Hispanic black, non-Hispanic white), age at first birth, cohabitation status at first birth, cognitive ability, poverty status in 1979, family composition at age 14, and her mother’s (R’s maternal grandmother’s) educational attainment. Models also control for the young adult’s sex and the age at which the dependent variable is assessed (14–19).
