Possible mechanism of the anti-aging effects of ubiquinol-10 supplementation. In response to ubiquinol-10, increased cAMP levels activate SIRT1 and PGC-1α by increasing the levels of phosphorylated CREB, LKB1, and AMPK. SIRT1 deacetylates and activates PGC-1α that can then induce Sirt3, which activates SOD2, IDH2, and mitochondria genes though NRF2 and TFAM. Activated SOD2, IDH2, and mitochondria genes produced an increased ratio of GSH:GSSG that decreases ROS levels and increases the activity of mitochondrial electron transport chain complexes I and IV. Together, these effects protect tissues from oxidative stress and prevent the accelerated senescence seen in SAMP1 mice.
