The phenomenon of non-response to escalating SSRI doses is the first indicator of “failure” of a putative “SSRI challenge test.” Other indicators of a failed SSRI challenge test are exhibiting mania or hypomania, tachyphylaxis (often accompanied by rapid response), and/or paradoxical response to SSRIs. Such individuals are predicted to respond poorly to future SSRI trials.
