[1-14C]-acetate, d-[U-14C]-glucose and l-[U-14C]-threonine incorporation into lipids of the procyclic trypanosomes. 14C-labelled fatty acid methyl esters and sterols were separated by HPTLC after transesterification and analysed as described in the Experimental procedures section. The EATRO1125.T7T procyclic cells were incubated 16 h in SDM79 containing 4 mM glucose and 4 mM threonine with 1 mM acetate and [1-14C]-acetate (lanes A), d-[U-14C]-glucose (lanes G) or l-[U-14C]-threonine (lanes T) prior to lipid extraction. The data are expressed as nmol of acetate, glucose or threonine (radioactive and non-radioactive molecules) incorporated into fatty acids or sterols in 108 cells per hour. Error bars indicate mean ± SD of 5 independent experiments.
