Representation of the rat cranial base growth plate (CBGP) showing the application of exogenous mechanical forces (cf. Almubarak et al. 2005; Collins et al. 2005). The direction of mechanical forces applied to the rat maxilla at 500 mN and 4 Hz for 20 min/day over two consecutive days is indicated (downward pointing arrow).
