Cells were initially grown to the mid-exponential phase in MSBYG medium before organic solvent was directly added. Cell survival was examined after 12 h of solvent exposure. The number of surviving cells is represented by symbols: − (no survival) and + (survival). The number of plus signs corresponds to cell numbers (CFU mL−1): + (<102), ++ (102–104), +++ (104 to 106), ++++ (1×108–50×108), +++++ (50×108–100×108), and ND (not determined).
