Gd complex 4 was synthesized by a multistep procedure. The reaction of 1 with DTPA bis-anhydride affords the mono-substituted DTPA ligand 2. The metallation of 2 with GdCl3 under basic conditions affords Gd complex 3. Finally, Gd complex 4 is achieved through a disulfide–thiol exchange reaction with 3-mercaptopropyltriethoxysilane.
