Grids containing the unstained cells were prepared as described in Materials and Methods. Cells were grown to the exponential phase with glucose (A and C) or biphenyl (B and D) as the sole carbon source. A sample of exponentially growing cells of Pseudomonas sp. strain B4 in a defined medium supplemented with glucose (E) was shifted to a medium containing 4-chlorobiphenyl as the sole carbon source (F).
