T3 phage, procapsid and heads. (a) The procapsid (capsid I) of phage T3 that has initiated DNA packaging. (b) Capsid with DNA in the early stages of packaging, after the conversion of capsid I to the more angular, larger capsid II. (c) A conventional T3 head that converts to the following: (d) A modified T3 head, as demonstrated here in vitro. (e) T3 phage, as found in vivo. The data obtained here show that the external DNA segment of (d) is from the left DNA end (last end packaged) and has a variably quantized length. Based on data for T7, the tail fibers are made of gp17; the main body of the tail is made of gp11 and gp12. Gp11 is connector-proximal; gp12 is connector-distal (Cuervo et al., 2013).
