Bar graph representing mean and standard deviation (SD) of dendritic counts in cortical cultures exposed to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) or saline. In vitro stimulation with LPS did not alter the number of dendritic processes in CD1 (toll-like receptor 4 [TLR-4] competent) or HEJ (TLR-4 mutant) compared to saline. For CD1 cultures, the number of processes in saline-exposed cocultures was 4.3 ± 0.20 compared to 4.6 ± 0.30 for LPS-exposed cocultures (P > .05, Student t test). For HEJ cultures, the number of processes was not significantly different between saline- (4.6 ± 0.3) and LPS (4.5 ± 0.3; P > .05, Student t test)-exposed cultures.
