Mesoscale structural remodeling is an important middle step linking tissue compaction forces and tissue stiffening. Elastic modulus is more weakly correlated with contraction stress (A, R2 = 0.44) than with mesoscale structure (cross-sectional area) (B, R2 = 0.68), indicating that cell generated compaction forces alone are not enough to determine the tissue stiffness, and the mesoscale structural remodeling is an important middle step linking tissue compaction forces and tissue stiffening.
