General scheme of using (a) single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and (b) positron emission tomography (PET) to image a column-shaped object. Radiation detectors consisting of scintillation crystals and photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) measure γ-rays emitted either directly in SPECT or indirectly through positron recombination in PET.
