Equation of state of the helix in the membrane. (A) The dependence of α on Peff and L, for three different ω values. The tilt angle (α) was calculated using the second line of eq 6 in the range 15 Å < Peff < 50 Å and 20 Å < L < 40 Å, using the appropriate limitations on L and Peff (i.e., (PL) < 5 Å and Peff ≥ 0.8L). Clearly, the dependence of α on ω is marginally weak. As expected, α decreases with L and increases with Peff. (B) The dependence of α on Peff/L for ω = 0.075 kT2. The tilt angle α increases with an increase in Peff at the same L (symbols with the same color). Interestingly, there is a linear relation between α and the Peff-to-L ratio at constant (PeffL).
