Protein content, neutrophil count (PMN), macrophage count (macrophages), interleukin-6 (IL-6), macrophage inhibitory protein 2 (MIP-2α) and interleukin-1β (IL-1β) in lung lavage fluid and lung wet-to-dry weight ratio (WD ratio) in old (gray bars) and young rats (black bars). Animals were ventilated for 4 hours with tidal volume (VT) of 8, 16 or 24 ml/kg body weight, respectively. * = P <0.05 young vs. old animals with same VT; # = P <0.05 versus VT 8 in same age group.
