Acidification selectively inhibits complexes I and III of the electron transport chain. Exposure to an acidic environment (pH 6.8) decreased the enzyme activity of complex I (A) and complex III (C) both at baseline and following ischemia. Complex IV (D) was unaffected by acidic pH. Complex II (B) was not inhibited by acidic pH in the baseline state but was inhibited in mitochondria isolated from hearts following ischemia.
