Alignment of the amino acid sequences of the C-terminal ends of the A-subunits and B-subunits of 8 stx2d-positive and 8 stx2d-negative O178:H19 strains investigated in this study. Amino acid sequences in bold show the activatable tail in the A-subunit and the END motif in the B-subunit. Amino acid sequences which contain both motifs, thus correspond to the mucus-activatable stx2d variant, are shaded. The following sequences were used as references: stx2a (GenBank accession no.
