On the matrix side, the manganese dismutase SOD2 detoxifies superoxide (O-2) to hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), which is then being converted to water. SOD2 is activated by SIRT3. On the inter-membrane space side, superoxide is being converted to hydrogen peroxide by the copper/zinc dismutase SOD1.
