Figure 1.

(A) According to a recent model,46 on average the axons from the RGCs in the superior and inferior macular regions (i.e., within the ±8° green circle) fall within the red and blue regions, respectively. The RGC axons in the superior region of the macula enter the optic disc in the temporal quadrant (red), while those in the lower macula enter in the inferior, as well as the temporal quadrant (blue). (B) According to the model, there is a VMR (magenta) and a LVMR (cyan). The VMR is associated with the MVZ of the disc. (C) The regions of the disc associated with the VMR and LVMR are indicated by the magenta and cyan diagonal lines, respectively. (D) The portion of the model in panel B associated with the upper visual field (inferior retina) is shown; it contains a LVMR (cyan) and a VMR (magenta).
