Analysis of lumen morphology as a function of gel collagen concentration and oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL). A, Inner area, which represents the area of the capillary lumen (black diamonds), and the outer area (gray diamonds), which represents the lumen and endothelial cells, or total area of the capillary. The inner area increases significantly with increasing gel collagen content (Inline graphic), and the outer area shows a similar trend (Inline graphic). The difference between the inner and outer areas represents cell wall thickness, or endothelial cell area, which shows a trend to increase with the gel collagen concentration. B, Inner (black squares) and outer (gray squares) areas in cells treated with oxLDL demonstrated the same trend but a reduced difference between inner and outer areas corresponding to a decrease in cell wall thickness.
