During development, the number of attractor stable states (represented by wells in which a rolling ball can be trapped) increases through a differentiation process (filled lines arrows). Conversely, during aging (dashed lines arrows), the landscape goes through a dedifferentiation process leading to the disappearance or merging of some attractors.
