Pulmonary antimicrobial peptide production during the recall response to C. neoformans in protectively and non-protectively immunized mice. BALB/c mice received an initial immunization with HK C.n. (HK) or C. neoformans strain H99γ and were allowed 60 days to resolve the infection. Mice then received a second intranasal challenge with 1×10⁴ c.f.u. of C. neoformans strain H99. Lung homogenates were prepared from lungs excised on days 1, 3, 5 and 7 post-inoculation and assayed for S100A8 (a), S100A9 (b), lipocalin-2 (c) and SAA3 (d) production by ELISA. Data are cumulative of two experiments utilizing four mice per group per time point for each experiment. Asterisks indicate significant differences (*P<0.05).
