Schematic overview of study design. The time scale at the top represents the weeks after vaccination. At time zero mice were immunized with attenuated mutant strains and controls. Mice were challenged by intraperitoneal injection with live MAP 6 weeks after vaccination. Five mice in each of 11 groups were sacrificed at the 12- and 18-week time points.
