Classification of examples of variable DNA methylation levels in populations. The inheritance patterns for the DNA methylation patterns can include examples of local (cis) inheritance, examples of distant (trans) inheritance, or highly unstable examples that have limited or no heritability. These examples also can be classified based on whether a genetic change is involved and if so, what type of genetic change occurs.
