Thymectomy reduces the response of NP-specific CD4 T cells in the lung airways of influenza virus-infected mice. Young mice, aged mice (19–20 months old) and thymectomized and sham thymectomized 10 month old mice (9 months after thymectomy) were infected with 3,000 EID50 ×-31 influenza virus and the bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) was assessed at 10 and 12 days post infection for total CD4 T cells and Flu NP-specific CD4 T cells. The absolute number of NP311–325/IAb-specific CD4 T cells in the BAL of individual mice from a representative experiment of two is shown. Data were analyzed by unpaired t-test with Welch correction (**, p < 0.005; NS, not significant).
