Illustration of the relationship among different physiologic parameters associated with oxygen demand and supply of the brain. Arterial blood (oxygenation Ya) delivers oxygen to brain tissue, the flow rate of which is denoted by CBF. Brain tissue extracts a portion of the oxygen carried by the blood for its metabolism, the rate of which is denoted by CMRO2. The portion of oxygen that remains in the blood will determine the value of Yv and is drained through veins at the rate of CBF. Ch is a constant representing the oxygen-carrying capacity of blood.
